A Choppy Chilly One!

It has been quite a bizarre day weather wise, almost like 4 seasons in one day!  It started off this morning bright and sunny, then we had wind and rain, then we had sleet to finish off the day!

I was slightly apprehensive about going in the lake as it was very windy which usually equals very choppy!

However, my swimming partner was back from his holidays and he wasn't going to let me wimp out so I found myself shivering at the shores of windermere at 6pm in the cold wind looking out onto a choppy lake!

I tried not to contemplate it too long before getting in and swimming our agreed route!

Once I got in the temperature of the lake didn't feel too bad, but the chop was throwing me around like a ragdoll!  At one point I thought I might get seasick!  I was really pleased that I managed to control my negative thoughts and continued battling on!

It was hard work and I felt like I had swum much further than the 0.41 miles I actually did swim!

The shivers really took hold of me once I got out!  I think the air temperature must be much lower than in recent weeks!

I have now swum for 51 weeks - I am nearly at my 1 year goal!!!

A Cold Club Run or Two!

Tonight was my Ladies Running Club and I had planned 2 off road runs now that the nights are light and the weather is dry!

Although it was very cold and quite windy I had two lovely and very enjoyable runs.

The first group went 4.47 miles and the second group went 4.19 miles.

There was one hairy moment when we had to go through a field of cows, which is something I am not keen on at the best of times!  Luckily, Sue a lady in the group was very brave and managed to steer them away from us!  I am not sure I could wave my arms and shout at them quite so confidently but it seemed to do the trick!

My first Solo swim!

Today I went for a swim in Lake Windermere, alone for the very first time!

Although being safety conscious I wasn't totally alone as I took my husband and dog along as a "land spotter", I just didn't have anyone in the water with me!

My swimming buddy has gone on holiday so I decided rather than miss my usual weekend swim I would go alone!

It was a bright but cool afternoon and the lake was busy with boats which added to the stress of it all, although I had my tow float and green hat so I was fairly visible!

My plan was to swim close to the shore so if something happened my husband had half a chance of rescuing me or at least throwing a life ring to me!

I put all these negative thoughts out my head before getting in!

The lake was calm and I set off without thinking too much about being alone!

I was pleasantly surprised that once I got swimming I didn't once think about the fact I was alone until I got to our "turn around" spot and I had no one to chat to!

When I emerged from the lake the dog got very excited to see me although he hadn't attempted to swim with me - he obviously isn't THAT devoted!!

I managed half a mile which I am pleased about considering the lake is still chilly and I was on my own!

Hillier than remembered!

Today I did Wray 10K Scarecrow Fesitval Road Race, which I enjoyed but it was much hillier than I remembered!

Read how I got on here!!

Resting!

I haven't done much exercise this week mainly because I have been very busy at work and I have felt absolutely drained after Sundays triathlon!

Last night and tonight I have done absolutely nothing, which I hope will be perfect preparation for the Wray Scarecrow 10K I am running tomorrow!

With a good night's sleep I will be raring to go and there will be no stopping me!

Fingers crossed this plan works!

Tri Club Training

Today has been another beautiful day and I did consider whether to go swimming or not - after all who wants cooped up in a grotty pool on a lovely sunny evening when they could be sat in the garden with a glass of wine in hand!

However, I forced myself to go and soon discovered that everyone else obviously had had my "garden thoughts" and had followed them as it was very very quiet!

I just had one other swimmer in my lane!

We had an evening of drills - which I hate at the best of times and tonight I certainly wasn't feeling it!

I didn't enjoy the session at all and wished I had stayed at home!

However, I did do 1850 metres so its not all bad!

Another week!

I have got over my disappointment in my performance at yesterdays Triathlon! Time to move on!

Last night I did 2 runs with Women on the Run  (my Ladies running club), and thoroughly enjoyed both!

It had been a fabulous day weather wise and it was a fantastic evening for a run!

The first group ran 4.39 miles at an average 10.08 minute mile pace and we didn't have to loop back to pick up any runners who were getting left behind!

The second group ran 4.46 miles at an average 11.29 minute mile pace which included several loop-backs to pick up the back-runners! The back-runners ran 3.7 miles at an average 14.47 minute mile pace!

I am so proud of both groups who have all come on marvelously since they started running!

I am also very proud of my legs which kept going through both groups despite feeling exceptionally tired after yesterdays Triathlon!

Today was another bright and sunny spring day which was perfect for an evening swim in Lake Windermere! The water temperature is slowly creeping up and tonight it didn't feel cold at all - well not with a wetsuit on, 2 hats, gloves and socks!

It wasn't completely still but it wasn't choppy enough to bother me!
I thoroughly enjoyed it and felt like I could have swam forever!!!

We swam 0.60 miles altogether which is the longest lake swim I have done this year!

Bring on warmer days and longer lake swims!

Disappointed with my efforts!

Today I completed Kendal Sprint Triathlon and was very disappointed with my performance!

You can read how I got on in my race review here!

Race Day tomorrow!

I have been very lapse with my blogging this week so I will do a quick round up of what I have been up to since the last time I was here!

Last Saturday I was a little hungover after enjoying a good night out with an old friend! Consequently it was after 3pm before I could muster enough energy to go for a run and rather stupidly I was still determined to fulfil the long run that was on my training plan!

I decided to do a "there and back" route so that I could do the exact number of miles I wanted plus I could practice a "negative split" run where I hoped to run back faster than I had run there!

Believe it or not it was my first run this year in a T Shirt and cropped tights, up until now I have been wrapped in long tights and long sleeved tops as its been so cold!

However, on this run despite the Summer attire I was still feeling rather warm (perhaps it was all the alcohol seeping out my pores!).  I tried just to concentrate on my running form and not think about pace.  I had set my Garmin to tell me when I had run 5 miles as at this point I wanted to turn around.

I felt fine running on the way there but when I turned round to come back I really struggled and there was no way my legs were going to go faster however hard I tried!

I managed 10 miles in 1 hour 32 minutes which is an average 9.12 minute mile.  Not too bad considering this is the longest run I have done since the beginning of December! I didn't manage a negative split but was pleased that my return run time was identical to my outward run time so at least I didn't slow down!

However, once I had got home, showered and settled down to watch the Grand National I was feeling really really sick! I decided that it was perhaps because I was hungry and tried to force some sausage and baked beans down! I managed the baked beans but no way was the sausage going down!

I'm not sure whether this was caused by running with a hangover or pushing too hard on a warm day!

However, being a glutton for punishment I was still up for going to a Beer Festival although I must admit the drink didn't go down too well and I nursed a couple all night!

On Sunday I was feeling much better and we went for a easy 5 mile walk before I went for a swim in Lake Windermere. Thankfully it was a nice afternoon and the lake was very calm, the only problem with good weather is it encourages all the teenagers to sunbathe on the jetty whilst drinking beer!

I hate swimming with an audience as I feel under pressure but with this gobby lot watching there was no way I was not going to push myself!

The lake is now getting busier with boats so we decided to swim along the shore to the piers and back again to stay away from the boats in the middle of the lake!  Once I got going I fell into a comfortable stroke and really enjoyed it!  I managed my longest swim in the lake this year - 800 metres! Hopefully I can start building back up again now the weather is improving!

On Monday I had my Ladies running club (Women on the Run) and it was the first time we had split into 2 groups to enable us to have a faster longer run and a shorter slower run!

At the first group we had 16 ladies and we ran 4.4 miles at an average 9.40 minute mile pace which is much faster than they have previously run, then with the next group we had 10 ladies and ran 3.5 miles at an average 13.16 minute mile pace. This was a fantastic achievement considering a lot of the ladies are very new to running!

The weather on Tuesday was horrendous so I opted to go for a pool swim.  It was extremely busy in the pool with a lot of slow breaststroke swimmers so I only swam 1700 metres in 39 minutes before calling it a day!  I didn't want to let my lane rage get out of control so thought getting out was the best option!

On Wednesday I went to the Tri Club Swimming Training Session and this time I had the opposite problem of keeping up with the other swimmers in my lane! This time I did 2300 metres in 56 minutes and felt exhausted at the end!

On Thursday I went for another lake swim and although it was very calm it was much much colder than it had been at the weekend! However, we did the same half mile jetty to the piers swim.  I didn't enjoy it as much as I had on Sunday as I felt really cold and my hands and feet felt numb!

I have been resting since then ready to be in peak condition for tomorrow's triathlon!  Its my first triathlon of the season and although it is only a pool sprint tri I am starting to feel extremely nervous about it!

I have an extremely early start time of 8.00.20! This means I am with all the slower swimmers - I hope lane rage doesn't bubble up inside me!

I have decided on 3 goals.

A. The slowest time I would be happy with.
B. A realistic time I think I can achieve.
C. A "Dreams are made of this, Too good to be true" time.

400 Metre Swim:

A.27:10        B. 26:30   C. 26:00

TOTAL FINISH TIME:
A. 1:28:03

I will report back tomorrow and let you know how I get on!

Addicted?

Well it's the last day (technically) of the Easter Holidays and today was supposed to be a  rest day!

If you mean rest from exercise I have definitely done that however I have cleaned the entire house and I now feel more tired than I do after exercising!

I also feel slightly depressed!

Is this the effects of me not doing adrenaline inducing exercise or the effect housework has on me?!

Tonight I am going out for a meal and a few drinks with an old school friend but hopefully tomorrow I will be compos mentis enough to get out for a run!

A Brick Session!

When I got up this morning I was pleasantly surprised that I wasn't hobbling around after yesterday's hill session so I decided that my body could take a bit more punishment.

I opted to do a brick session as I haven't done many and its less than 2 weeks until my first tri of the season!

I did the Kendal Tri Bike route and the Kendal Tri Run route and it went surprisingly well considering I was on tired legs!

After a dull start the sun actually decided to make an appearance that warmed things up a bit!

I was cycling without socks as I usually don't bother fiddling around with socks during a Tri but since I have new cycling shoes since last year I thought it would be a good idea to ensure they were comfortable sockless!

They were comfortable but my word my feet got a little chilly in the process, luckily the run warmed them up!

I was pleased that I managed the 3.88 mile run at an average 8.41 minute mile pace after a 13 mile cycle!

For the first mile my legs felt like jelly and didn't appear to be following my instructions but thankfully they still performed!

Onwards and Upwards!

Hills are our friends!

When I woke up this morning it was overcast but dry so as the weather forecast was horrendous for later I decided to go for an early run!

I had set myself the challenge of doing some hill reps on a seriously long hill about a mile from where I live.

I set my Garmin up to help me with the training!

Literally just as I got to the bottom of the street the heavens opened and torrential rain started!  I did consider turning around and going home but I was already soaking wet through so I thought I might as well continue!

I started off with a warm-up (much needed in the weather!), then once I was at the hill I ran 0.20 miles up, then 0.10 miles down until I eventually made it to the top!  This took four intervals and was seriously hard going especially in the rain and wind, then I had to run home which involved more hills - however there was also a nice long descent to enjoy!

Altogether I ran 6.1 miles, climbed 781 feet all at an average 9.43 minute mile pace which I am really pleased with considering the elevation and weather!

I am going to try and repeat this route regularly to strengthen my climbing legs!

A cycle and swim

This morning was a dull but dry day so I took the opportunity to get out for a short blast on my bike! You never know when it will be dry again in this part of the world!

I decided to do a practise of the Kendal Tri Bike route, to see if I could perfect climbing the hills in the correct gear and descending without falling off!

The roads on the route are appalling - absolutely full of pot holes which made it a little scary at times! They aren't even just little potholes you can bounce over, but more if you hit one you might disappear forever! I had to really keep my eyes peeled and hoped I didn't hit any!

I really enjoyed the ride although I am still not happy with

a) my climbing skills
b) my cornering skills
c) my descending skills

I think I am going to need an awful lot more hours in the saddle before The Windermere Triathlon in July as its certainly too late to worry about it now for Kendal's in 2 weeks time!

I cycled 12.97 miles at an average speed of  14.1 MPH, not the 15 MPH I was aiming for but getting there!

This evening I had a swim date in the lake!

After the lovely calm swim at the weekend I was hoping for more of the same - but I was sadly disappointed!

Stand watching the waves rippling across the lake send shivers through me but I tried to stay positive.

Once kitted out in my full gear we set off for the jetty where 2 teenage lovers were canoodling!  The thought that I was going to be watched and judged by this pair escalated my fears but also made me more determined that I was going to beat the lake and not make a fool out of myself!

Once I got swimming, although it was hard work battling the waves I forgot my fear and actually enjoyed it!

However, I was exhausted at the end after swimming only 0.36 mile but I DID IT!

Monday 4 April 2016

In the Pool!

This morning when I woke up I was disappointed that the weather forecast had got it wrong - again! Instead of the cloudy day I was expecting we had rain!

I am a total fair weather cyclist as wet roads scare me, so I changed my plans!  Instead of going for a bike ride I headed to the swimming pool!

I was expecting there to be hoardes there on a wet morning in the Easter Holidays!  The main pool was very very busy but luckily for me there was only one other person in the lanes so I had a really good swim apart from my goggles not playing nicely!  Initially they kept steaming up and then they started leaking so I spend most of my time frantically adjusting them at the end of each length!

I did my standard 1700 metres in 38 minutes 8 seconds then I continued swimming until I had done a hour!  Altogether I swam 2700 metres (1.68 miles) which is the furthest I have swum in a while!

Time to work more on increasing my speed now!

This evening it was my "Women on the Run" Running group. With it being the Easter Holidays I was expecting it to be a quiet one as everyone is so busy with other things! However, I was surprised when 15 ladies turned up ready to run and thankfully the rain had stopped!

We had a great 5 mile run at an average 10.12 minute mile pace! I can't believe how much faster they are getting in such a short time!

I am very proud of them all!

Sunday 3 April 2016

Lots of walking!

On Thursday we walked a nice 5 mile route and conquered Bakestall which is our 58th Wainwright! This was hard going as the path just went straight up, no meandering around the fell! By the time we got to the top we were exhausted!

On Friday I walked 7 miles with 2 friends and conquered Sheffield Pike in extreme wind, cold and sleet!  I was worried I was going to get blown off the top at times, but thankfully we survived! It would have been a really nice scenic route if the elements hadn't decided to go against us! One I would definitely do again in better weather!

Yesterday, I woke up to torrential rain and got that sinking feeling in my stomach when I realised I was supposed to be meeting a friend for a swim in Windermere!

I was determined that I wasn't going to wuss out - after all its just rain and I will be wet anyway!

I arrived at 10 am as arranged and the lake was very murky looking and it was still raining BUT it was as calm as calm can be!

I began to feel a bit more hopeful that it would be an OK swim!

I got changed into my wet suit and did some positive self talk.

Once I got into the lake and started swimming I forgot about the rain and had a really good swim! I didn't even notice the cold until the last 50 metres or so when my feet started to feel numb!

It was one of the more enjoyable lake swims I have done recently!

Last night I was at a 50th Birthday party so this morning I wasn't feeling very bright and breezy or ready for my 8 mile run but I wasn't going to not go!

After a Weetabix breakfast I set off with a route in mind.  I didn't want to worry about my pace so I decided to run with my heart instead and using my Heart Rate Monitor kept my heart rate at a constant rate!

When I got home I was surprised to see that I had run 8.39 miles at an average 8.45 minute mile pace which I am really pleased about under the circumstances!

Hopefully, weather permitting I will get out on my bike tomorrow!
