Tri-ing hard!

Tonight I did a double whammy session!  I went to my usual "Runfit" class where I had to endure another bleep test, but the good news is since the last one 5 weeks ago I have improved! Not massively but an improvement all the same!

Immediately after this I went to the tri club swimming session where we were doing 100m sprints!

I'm not sure if what I was doing could be regarded as a sprint but I was chuffed to get a PB for one of the 100m!  This was 1:55:20, which is about 5 seconds faster than my previous best!

Altogether I swam 1850 metres or 1.15 miles.

That brings my swimming total for 2015 to 20 miles, and my Jantastic miles for this week so far stand at 17.6 miles!

Feeling better about myself this week!

Working hard, here's hoping I get my reward!

Spring has sprung and my first brick in the wall!

Today I was inspired by the glorious weather to get out on the bike!  Not only did I get out on the bike but I also did my first outdoor “brick Session” of the season!

What is a brick session I hear you cry! A brick workout refers to the stacking of two disciplines during the same workout, one after the other with minimal interruption in between!

I have struggled to get out in the great outdoors on my bike as the evenings have been too dark and the weekends too busy!

Thankfully, the days are starting to get longer and this evening I managed to get an hour’s ride in before it started to get dark!

I decided to do a test of the Kendal Sprint cycle route with a little extra added on as I was cycling from home!

I planned on doing a “brick session” but it was still too cold to don my trisuit which has short legs!  I ummed and arred about what to wear as I wanted the padding and comfort of cycle shorts whilst cycling but I didn't want to feel like I was running in a nappy!

My cycling shorts are much more padded than my trisuit shorts and not good for running in!  However, I came up with the ideal solution – the Superwoman look!  I wore my long running tights with my cycling shorts over the top! Once my ride was over I could swiftly (or not so swiftly in reality!) whisk my shorts off, leaving me comfortable to run!

I have decided cycling is a dangerous sport – not only did I have other vehicles to contend with I also had the added danger of the general public who had obviously lost all commonsense whilst enjoying the sunshine!  I had one woman who was taking a photo of the scenery or little lambs in a field and when she realised she couldn't get everything in the photo she decided to step back off the grass verge straight in front of me – luckily I had been aware of her and was able to avoid crashing into her, if I had been going fast or was a car she might have been a little less lucky!

Later on I came across a group of walkers who thought they owned the road and they weren't going to go single file to let me past on a narrow country road! As well as having to contend with these “idiots” I also had to be on high alert for pot holes!  The state of the roads around where I live are appalling and I was very conscious that if I hit one I might disappear down and never be seen again!

When it comes to cycling hills are the enemy!  It’s not going up them I have a problem with – it’s coming down!  I am such a scaredy cat when it comes to speed, and I just can’t relax enough to let go of the brakes!  Descending with that feeling of really speeding up quickly really freaks me out, and I end up white knuckling the bars!

Tonight I tried hard to allow myself to gain a little speed going down hill before pulling on the brakes, whilst trying to stay relaxed and in control– hopefully with more practise my confidence will grow and I will turn into a speed queen!

I thoroughly enjoyed the 13 miles I somehow managed to survive on the bike!

Once I got home, I quickly stripped off my helmet, cycling jacket, shorts and shoes and tried to quickly put my running shoes on!  A quick sip of water and 3 minutes later I was on my way!  I think I need to work on getting this time down slightly!

I was feeling fantastic as I set off on my run and my legs took to running quicker than I thought they would! As you switch exercise you need to prepare for the next demand while recovering from the previous exercise demand!  This takes some getting used to!

I did 2.5 running miles and I had a fantastic session!  I felt happy and giddy with excitement when I got home!  This feeling reminded me why I had challenged myself to do triathlons this year!

Bring it on!

You can view my route and stats here!

So that's 15.45 miles to add to this weeks total mileage!

I think my new Berghaus VapourLight Hyper Smock must have magical powers!

Since receiving it I haven’t had the opportunity to test it yet – the weather has just been too good!  I’m not one to want rain but I really need some so I can put my new jacket through its paces to see if it does what it says on the label!

Jantastic Week 10 - I must do better!

This week I am going to commit to my training 100% whatever the weather or life throws at me!

I only have 7 weeks until my first triathlon of the season so I MUST get back on the programme properly!

Tonight I went swimming at the local leisure centre and although I managed to do 1600 metres in 37 minutes I didn't feel very fulfilled by the end!

For starters the pool was too warm - this is something I have NEVER experienced in our pool before! I dread to think what had made it sooooooo warm but tonight it was almost tropical and unfortunately this appeared to encourage all the blue rinse brigade to stay and chat!  I think they mistook the place for a bath rather than a pool and I spent my entire time overtaking them or saying "excuse me" to get to the wall!

GGRRRR!  I wasn't very happy at all but at least I still managed a decent distance!

They weren't going to beat me!

So that's 0.99 mile in the bag for week 10!

This week will NOT be another bad week!

Jantastic Week 9 Done in a Fashion!

I'm not feeling very much in control of my training or blogging at the moment - life just seems to get in the way!

On Wednesday I went to "Runfit" class then straight to swimming with the tri club which was an endurance session.  I managed 1750m at an average 3.06 min/100m.  This appears slow as it includes the drills etc which I do slowly!

On Thursday I had a parents evening at school so exercise went out the window, then on Friday I tried to do some speed work in my run!  I did a 1.75 mile warm-up and then did 2 miles as fast as I could!  I managed the first mile at 7.53 min/mile pace and the second mile was slightly slower at a 8.17 min/mile pace.  I then did a slow 2 mile jog home!

That was the end of my exercising for the week!

Yesterday I went Tree Top Trekking which was great fun until high winds stopped play and then today I was being pampered at a Spa day with some friends!

So I have done some pretty low mileage for this week!  I've even had to use another joker to cover my cycling activities that I just didn't have time to do!

So how bad has week 9 been in terms of mileage?

Well ... here goes!

I have not managed to meet my goal of 2 runs, 2 swims and 2 rides for the week however, I did manage to hit my distance swim goal of 2000m, so its not all bad!
So not a good week all in all but I have still managed to do some workouts!

My goal inI managed 2 short runs which were 7.62 miles,  and 5.89 miles.
I  managed 2 swims which were 1.37 miles and 1.09 miles.
I didn't manage ANY cycles!

Altogether a total of 15.97 miles for the week, 15.97 miles for March and 364.34 miles for Jantastic!

Week 1 miles = 45.08
Week 2 miles = 45.19
Week 3 miles = 54.60
Week 4 miles = 46.41

January Miles = 192.34

Week 5 miles = 39.21
Week 6 miles = 41.83
Week 7 miles = 51.84

Week 8 miles = 23.15

February Miles = 156.03

Week 9 miles = 15.97

March Miles = 15.97
Week 9 has been the lowest mileage to date during Jantastic and I haven't even got the "too ill" card to play!

I'm starting to feel ever so slightly stressed about not getting the miles in and I am worrying my fitness levels are going to get shockingly low!

Hey Ho! I MUST do better next week!

On the road to recovery!

Yesterday I was feeling tired and didn't know whether I should push myself to go swimming or to put my feet up and rest!

After sitting with my feet up for an hour I started to get Cabin Fever and decided I NEEDED to do some exercise or I would regret it for the rest of the night!

I convinced myself that I would just do a few slow lengths and see how I felt!

The few slow lengths turned into a few slow sets and before I knew it I had done 2200 metres or 1.37 miles in 53 minutes which is an average pace of 2.14 mins /100 metres!  The best bit is I felt great and really enjoyed it!  I think it helped somewhat that the pool was really quiet so I didn't have any swimmers irritating an already irritated me!

Today I went running with a new running club that has just been set up in Kendal which was advertised as a non-competitive social group for like minded people!

It was a bit of a rush for me as I was at work until after 4pm and the group were meeting at 4.45pm.  By the time I got home, ran the dog round the block and got changed into my running gear it was time to go!

There was only 3 of us who actually turned up for this first run, which I enjoyed for the social aspect and enjoyed meeting new people but it was more of a walk and talk than a run!  However, we covered 4 off road miles and then I went on and did 3.5 miles on my own! I didn't admit to the others I was going to go for a "proper" run and just pretended I was heading home!

Beginning to feel more like myself again.  Hopefully I have managed to shake off the infection!

Back to Swimming tomorrow!

Jantastic Week 8 complete ... but not fully!

This week, due to being stopped in my tracks by a Kidney Infection I have not managed to meet my goal of 2 runs, 2 swims and 2 rides for the week with the added distance goal of one of the rides being over 25 miles.

I did one of the swims/rides as a brick session but unfortunately the longest ride I managed was this session which was just 10.25 miles. Some way off my 25 mile goal! I used the joker to get me out of the 2nd ride as I couldn't possibly go out on my bike feeling how I'm feeling.

So not a good week all in all but I have still managed to do some workouts!

My goal inI managed 3 short runs which were 3.21 miles, 2.33 miles and 6.09 miles.
I only managed 1 swim which was 1.27 miles and
I only managed 1 short ride which was 10.25 miles.

Altogether a total of 23.15 miles for the week, 156.03 miles for February and 348.37 miles for Jantastic!

Week 1 miles = 45.08
Week 2 miles = 45.19
Week 3 miles = 54.60
Week 4 miles = 46.41

January Miles = 192.34

Week 5 miles = 39.21
Week 6 miles = 41.83
Week 7 miles = 51.84

Week 8 miles = 23.15

February Miles = 156.03

Week 8 has been the lowest mileage to date during Jantastic but I have got to put it behind me and move onwards and upwards.

Week 9 starts tomorrow with a swim distance goal of 2000 metres!

Bring it on!
